I’m privileged to have the day off, so in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I made the short, 20-minute drive across the river to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic, the site of a pre-Columbian Native American city near Collinsville, Illinois. I only visited the site once before, last year, for the first time since moving to St. Louis 25+ years ago. I should have visited more often.
It’s an awe-inspiring site each time you climb the 154 steps to the top of Monk’s Mound. From that vantage point, you can look back across the river to see the St. Louis skyline, with the Arch, sitting on the horizon. It’s a very cool setting. I’m really going to miss St. Louis. 😊
